The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur houses the world’s largest sundial, ‘Smarat Yantra’. This astronomical observatory has nineteen architectural astronomical instruments which fulfil diverse functions such as measuring time, tracking constellations and observing orbits around the sun.
This monument built by Sawai Jai Singh II in 1734 CE is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
He constructed five Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi. However, the Jantar Mantar observatory in Jaipur constructed between 1728 -1734, is the largest observatories among five and is best preserved among all. The major objective for the construction of this observatory was to study the space and time.
